Frank Mocks Health Reform Protesters, Bachmann


Rep. Barney Frank took a swipe at Rep. Michele Bachmann for organizing a rally to protest the Democrats' health care plan.


WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democratic Rep. Barney Frank took a dig Friday at the Republican lawmaker who organized a protest by conservatives against health care legislation.
Frank, a Massachusetts liberal, told an audience: "Some of the people (at the rally) that wanted to engage me in conversation appeared to have been the losers in the 'Are you smarter than Michele Bachmann contest?"'
Rep. Bachmann, R-Minn., had organized Thursday's rally attended by thousands of conservatives critical of the Democrats' health care plan. Her spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment. Frank, who recently compared arguing with an angry voter to conversing with a dining room table, said this week's protest was like being trapped inside a furniture warehouse.

Education policy

Bachmann supports the teaching of intelligent design in public school science classes.[78] During a 2003 interview on KKMS Christian radio program "Talk The Walk", Bachmann said that evolution is a theory that has never been proven, one way or the other.[79] She co-authored a bill that would require public schools to include alternative explanations for the origin of life as part of the state's public school science curricula.[80] In October 2006, Bachmann told a debate audience in St. Cloud, Minnesota, that "there is a controversy among scientists about whether evolution is a fact or not.... There are hundreds and hundreds of scientists, many of them holding Nobel Prizes, who believe in intelligent design."

Foreign policy

Bachmann says in dealing with Iran, diplomacy "is our option," but that other options, including a nuclear strike, shouldn't be taken off the table

Health care

Bachmann contributed to the "death panel" controversy when she read from a July 24 article written by Betsy McCaughey from the floor of the House. Sarah Palin said that her "death panel" remark was inspired by what she called the "Orwellian" opinions of Ezekiel Emanuel as described by Bachmann,[63][64][65][66][67][68] who accused him of advocating health care rationing by age and disability.[69] According to PolitiFact[70] and Time magazine,[71] Bachmann distorted Emanuel's position on health care for the elderly and disabled. Barney Frank Present When Partner Arrested for Pot


The Democratic congressman was present for a marijuana bust at his partner's home in Maine in 2007.


Rep. Barney Frank admitted Friday that he was sitting on the porch of his partner’s Maine home when police came to arrest his partner for marijuana possession.
Frank, responding to new reports that he was present during the Aug. 2007 arrest of James Ready, said in a statement he was unaware Ready had marijuana plants.
According to a police report obtained by MyFoxBoston, Maine police arrested and charged James Ready with marijuana possession, cultivation and use of drug paraphernalia. He pleaded guilty to civil possession and paid a fine. The remaining charges were dismissed last year.
Frank was not charged.
Frank is the author of a medical marijuana bill that would outlaw the prosecution of persons who use marijuana for medicinal purposes.
