I have a 46 year old brother who fits this description. Aspergher's. When he was five, the Catholic school deemed him mentally retarded and dismissed him. He went to to the public school system and got speech therapy. He graduated high school and college with an IT degree. He was always the night shift and was the first to be be let off in layoffs because of his social skill's. He hasn't worked in ten years because his interview skills are so bad.
Flash forward thirty years. My son was diagnosed with an autism related diagnosis in 2001: PDD. He immediately got 40 hours of intervention. I can tell you about the difference in my child. Instead of being mute,he is now wildly verbal, often running rings around me. I was told his cognitive IQ would be 70 at best, well folks his IQ is unbalanced but well off the charts.
