Regis,

What you did here was really amazing--

You built the first electronic bridge where 'enemies'-- the citizens of warring nations, could talk directly and personally to each other, day and night

In so doing, you created something that had never existed before-- a place where the common people on the opposite sides of a world at war could converse across the great gaping divides of religion, culture and politics.

Across the lines of intense hatred and violence, across the agonizing and often frightening clash of civilizations. Across oceans of fear and mistrust.

The talk was not always pretty or easy or pleasant-- but nevertheless, IH was a new kind of conversation, one that had never occured before--

Not ever in history, in any of mans' previous countless wars, back into the mists of our most ancient past, had a conversation like this ever occured during wartime.

It was the first of it's kind-- and the whole world responded here.

Nearly one million hits from every corner of the globe are bare testimony to the power of the space that you created-- between warring peoples and feuding factions that spanned the entire planet.

You were, amongst the chaos, and often intense and occasionally frightening exchanges here-- frequently funny, sometimes gruff and caustic, prone to telling people off-- but underneath of it all you were always amazingly patient.

Considering the open death threats against you (posted numerous times on these boards) the often withering insults and the constant attempts to hack this site into oblivion, people who complained about your occasional cantankerousness had no idea how patient you really were.

You were also tough and wiley and you boldly and courageously helped put Al Quaedas main website out of business while authorities were still fumbling around right after 911.

From there you continued to track terrorist communications across the Internet for years afterwards, and assembled a team of dedicated volunteers who supported your efforts-- but you always made it clear to every one that your greatest dream was one of a deeper understanding, and possibly even someday, a greater peace.

IH was indeed an amazing idea that you conceived and made real-- it was a mixture of genius and inspiration and raw courage.

And likely every future human conflict will now have it's own IH-- this is a gift that you, Jon, have given to our children.

Perhaps it is too soon to know if such forums can really make any kind of difference, perhaps it will take a very long time and many more wars for electronic bridges like these to have an impact on a suffering humanity.

But you built the first electronic bridge between warring nations anyway...

And I suspect that your inspiration and the risks that you took and the new venue that you created will have an impact.

Jon, the word 'hero' applies to very few people.

It most certainly applies to you.

Sleep in peace my brother. Take your well deserved rest, my friend.

Jake,
The words that you wrote are just beautiful. It is hard to capture the essence of Jon, but I think you captured some of the best things that he stood for.

I find myself coming here alot to read what everyone thought about Jon. It is so nice to see that overall everyone could acknowledge his brilliant brain, his twisted way of thinking that actually made sense, his humor and just him being him.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write something so beautiful in his honor.

Hey CBaby! Hope you got a chance to see our NYC pics. Regis' picture came with us every where we went. NYC was carrying it; he set up the picture on a table at every bar. Here are some pics.

Hi Cbaby! It was great! He literally had his own place EVERY where we went! Ron carried him everywhere. :)

I am 100% sure that Regis more than enjoyed the personal attention! He was always one that enjoyed the 'extra special' care someone could give him. To know that he was 'carried' everywhere.....I'm sure he is looking down with a huge grin upon his face and thinking "It's about time!"

Cherie,

I have been traveling most of the last 10 days and just now saw your very kind post.

I have been on the road looking at graduate schools (I am hoping to go back to school at age 44, crazy as that may be). So I just got back in town from my 'tour' of possible schools yesterday, so my sincere apologies for not responding sooner.

Thanks for your very kind words of appreciation-- I'm glad that you liked it, that means a lot. It's easy to write when you are writing about someone like Jon.

I loved what you said about Jons "twisted way of thinking that actually made sense"-- that made me laugh and yet it is so true when you think about it!!

For instance, who could imagine that something like IH would work-- and yet somehow Jon knew that it would when others probably couldn't even imagine the idea of IH at all!

Knowing Jon through IH, it was a pleasure to see the fruits of his amazing mind as well as his great sense of humor.

He was also lucky to have a life partner that had the capacity to see through the twists and turns of his thinking to the brilliance that was the result, and then support him in what he was doing.

Especially when you consider how courageous many of of his actions were-- that must have required a brave wife and a brave family to back up such a brave man.

Best wishes to you Cherie, during this time of loss and healing.

Jake,
You are gifted with knowing how to write. In reading your post I can truly see that you certainly did know how to appreciate Jon and his wicked sense of how he spun things.

Jon's idea of IH was something just off the top of his head. He wanted to do something because 9/11 really shook him up. When he came up with the IH board he had such high hopes that people would converge here to discuss the world topics...of course what he wanted and what happens with the postings on the board are two different things.

I wish you luck with your new endeavour of grad school! You give those of us over 40 great hope to accomplish something so wonderful!

I wish you the best yourself. Take care.

It can't be ignored that what he got is precisely what the world is. Just maybe, the majority of the world really is conservative/free market and America does dominate. Maybe not, but it's possible. Instead of lamenting that he didn't get what he wanted to get, he should have seen that what he got was reality. But I think he saw it. And it's not so bad. I think he, and many social liberals, have a skewed view of what social conservatism consists of. He was a brilliant guy but none of us are immune to our egos and the onslaught of propaganda from the egos of others.

The hardest thing to do, especially for a strong willed person, is to look outside our own ego. I think Regis did a very good job of that, while still sticking to his guns as far as his own convictions. Regis really cared about humanity. It showed. And he did what he thought was right to help. He did a good job. Maybe he wasn't perfect as none of us are, but he did the right thing. He has had a profound impact on history.

I'd like to add that Jon did in fact manage to forge bridges across the political divide - whatever that is - where previously there were none, as witnessed by the most unlikely connections, if not friendships, which have sprung up here as a result.

Hey Regis.

Thanks for the Blood Hound tag. I'm going to retire it for a little bit although I've always felt it was huge compliment coming from you.

I sure do miss you.
