In the wake of a memorial for a DPS police dog who died here in Tucson, authorities in Chandler, Arizona have a similar case on their hands.

Authorities have arrested a Chandler police officer in the death of a police dog that was left in a hot patrol car for more than twelve hours. Chandler police Sergeant Tom Lovejoy was booked into Maricopa County jail in Phoenix on a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty after a two-week investigation into the death of five-year-old Belgian Malinois "Bandit."

The sheriff's investigation shows Bandit was in Lovejoy's patrol car from about nine in the morning to a little after ten in the evening on August 11th.

During that time, the investigation found that Lovejoy ran errands for his wife, napped for a short time and later ate out with his wife. Later on, Lovejoy found "Bandit" dead in his patrol car. Lovejoy could face up to six months in jail and a 12 hundred dollar fine if he is convicted. What a fucking asshole ...

ARGH. Do you think he just forgot he had him in the car? I'd hate to believe that someone could be that cruel and leave their dog in the car that long on purpose.

I'm not sure how he could have forgotten. From what I understand, those K-9 cops take their dogs home at night and they live right there with them. I mean, the dogs are basically with the cops every minute of every day. I'm not sure how he could have forgotten.

same way people forget they have kids in their car and leave them to die in the heat.
