Anyone find that at all disturbing?

Why? They are on the run. Haha.

Just kidding but definitely no reason to especially panic.

Two possibilities.....

They lost... and it's over....

Or....

There's always a calm before a storm..

One thought process that has gone through my logic processes is that they have evolved from one identified threat after another..... Simply to many of thier plots have been foiled due to discovery by a variety of means....

If there is another attak........ It will be a legitimate surprise.

It would be worth speculating that the recent attacks against AL Z were too close for comfort, and it has been decided that the courier system for transporting messages was getting sloppy and has been discontinued or is being rethought. I seem to remember that the backtracking of these couriers was of great interest to various security forces.

It might also be suggested that the ISI support that Al Qaeda has is waning, or has been compromised or has recommended that AQ keep a low profile for a while. I think that the ISI probably has something to do with allowing these video to get to the public.

Just speculation, of course.

They have not gone away and they are still working on their next BIG attack. I wonder, however, if, given the relatively peaceful Ramadan this year outside Iraq, there have been any of the "where's the beef" complaints from jihadi footsoldiers we sometimes have heard in the past after (for them) disappointing periods of inactivity. The past close correlation between videos and immediately following attacks has not held true recently. Perhaps they are waiting with their next video until they are close to being ready to deliver some results?

But the new videos from their propaganda unit were being posted on the web as opposed to going to al jazeera... eliminating the courier

Excerpts from Bin Laden’s tribute to Abu Musab Al Zarqawi
(AP)

30 June 2006
CAIRO, Egypt - Excerpts from an audio message by Osama Bin Laden posted on the Web on Friday, praising slain Al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab Al Zarqawi. Translated from the Arabic by The Associated Press.

“Our Islamic nation was surprised to find its knight, the lion of jihad (holy war), the man of determination and will, Abu Musab Al Zarqawi, killed in a shameful American raid ... We pray to God to bless him and accept him among the martyrs as he had hoped for.

“... Even if we lost one of our greatest knights and and princes, we are happy that we have found a symbol for our great Islamic nations, one that the mujahedeen will remember and praise in poetry and in stories, secretly and aloud.

“... We remember his words, ’We are fighting in Iraq withour eye on Jerusalem’ ... He set the foundation to defend his religion, win the return of Palestine, God willing, and avenge the downtrodden. He exhausted the Americans, the allies of the Jews, and made them stagger, killing their men, bleeding them of money and breaking their ranks ... “Al Zarqawi’s story will live forever with the stories of the nobles, so don’t cry over one who is not missing. He can teach the world a lesson on how to seize freedom - for freedom can never be given to those cowering under the dome of democracy - and how to resist tyrants.

“... The enemy attacked Iraq ... the mountains shook .. and in these difficult circumstances, the knight of Islam Abu Musab appeared like a fierce lion ... He entered the war and began to fight, using a good number of Kalashnikovs and anti-tank mines and bazookas, for he had previous been in the holy war against the Russians (in Afghanistan).

“To those who accuse the knight of Islam of killing a certain sector of Iraq’s people, I say to them ... Abu Musab had clear instructions to focus his fight on the occupiers, particularly the Americans and to leave aside anyone who remains neutral. But for those who refused (neutrality) and stood to fight on the side of the crusaders against the Muslims, then he should kill them whoever they are, regardless of their sect or tribe. For supporting infidels against Muslims is a major sin. ...

“Then I tell (US President George W.) Bush: You must return the body of the hero to his family. And don’t be too happy. ... We will continue to fight you and your allies everywhere, in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia and Sudan to run down your resources and kill your men until you return defeated to your nation, just as we defeated yoou before in Somalia. And I tell your minion in Jordan: Enough tyranny. You prevented Abu Musab from entering his homeland while he was alive, don’t prevent that now. What scares you about Abu Musab after he’s dead? You know that his funeral, if allowed to happen, would be a huge funeral showing the extent of sympathy with the mujahedeen ...”

“In conclusion, I say that Abu Musab was not just an honor to his tribe, his country and his Islamic nation, but to all mankind, for he embodied the meaning of pride and glory.”

I was wondering about that. The news item popped up on Google, but there weren't any other mentions. I just thought maybe everyone was so bored with Binnie they weren't paying any attention any more... :add20:

It figures that our intrepid, alert CASEY would trump the MSM!!! :)

It's unusual for Zawahiri to be silent for this long. He was appearing a couple of times per month for several months on end. I figure this silence is due to disruption of communication rather than some change in al-Qaida. Theories:
1) Couriers might have been killed, e.g. at that madrassa that was flattened.
2) The raids at Damadola and the madrassa might have Zawahiri worried that the tapes or couriers are giving away his movements.
3) Where Zawahiri goes, bombers and drones follow, so it's possible that the local hillbillies in Waziristan are no longer accommodating him the way they used to.

Again, the messages are now posted on the web, no sent by courier. They don't need a courier if Zawahiri himself is at a computer connected to the internet. But if that were so, would he communicate only by these videos, and not in writing? Moreover, uploading at a fixed location could leave a trail. I figure these videos are taken away by some other person, dressed up with logos and subtitles and so on, and then uploaded at some neutral site, such as an internet café or a university, probably in a city.

They have an entire brigade devoted to "electronic Jihad" and aren't foolish enough to leave a trail back to where something was sent or uploaded from.
These guys are VERY well educated, and some of them get their training RIGHT HERE IN THE GOOD OL USA.

TERRORISM: UPCOMING VIDEO BY AL-QAEDA NO. 2 SAY FUNDAMENTALIST WEBSITES

Dubai, 18 Dec. (AKI) - A new video message by al-Qaeda's second in command Ayman al-Zawahiri will be released in the coming days, according to a report posted on Islamic fundamentalist websites Monday. The video was made by the al-Sahab company which has produced other messages by the terrorist network, says the report. The new message will reportedly focus on the "truth about the fight between Islam and unbelievers." According to some Islamic forum users al-Zawahiri will also discuss relations between the West and Islam after the historic trip of Pope Benedict XVI to Turkey on 28 November-1 December.

In his last message, aired by Qatar-based satellite television al-Jazeera on 27 July, al-Qaeda's deputy leader said his organisation would not stand idle as Israel continued its offensive on Lebanon and the Palestinians and called on Muslims to fight back.

The statement was the first by Sunni Muslim-dominated al-Qaeda on Israel's offensive in Lebanon, sparked on 12 July by the abduction of two Israeli soldiers by Lebanon-based Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which ended with a ceasefire mid August.

And yet another......

http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2006/12/new_al_qaeda_me.html

With European law enforcement officials warning of an imminent holiday terror attack, Web sites associated with al Qaeda announced today that the group's second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, is about to issue a new statement entitled "the truths about the clash between Islam and atheism."

According to the Associated Press, John Reid, Britain's top law enforcement official, said Sunday that it was "highly likely" that terrorists would attempt to mount an attack over the holiday period, when the number of travelers swells. He gave no other details.

The head of Britain's domestic spy agency MI5, Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller, has said her agents are tracking almost 30 terrorist plots involving 1,600 suspects, and that at least five major terror plots had been thwarted since the July 2005 transit bomb attacks in London.

Zawahiri's statement is being advertised by al Sahab, the production wing for al Qaeda. Typically, the statements are released a few days after being advertised by al Sahab, which would put this message out right before the Christmas holiday weekend begins.

I noticed that the English .doc was packed in the zip file on Dec. 10/06 and the English .pdf on Dec. 15/06. The Arabic document was zipped on Dec. 13/06 and the Arabic .pdf on Dec. 15/06.

The links were posted to the web last night however none of the worked and the person who had uploaded everything apologised.

I believe alot of the media dept. for AQ is new at the job as I understand several were arrested several months ago.

This is why I have assumed we have not heard anything for awhile.
