Okay...so I need help from a Dr. someone who knows about kidney disease and transplants. My oldest brother was told recently that he has about a year or so to go before he will need a transplant due to diabetes. They told him also that he can live for years on dialysis....until he can get a donor. I need to know some information about organ donation....specifically regarding people who could possibly donate as far as being siblings goes, and if gestational diabetes would affect giving a kidney....also possible other questions...so please if you can help me I would appreciate it.

My father has been a diabetic for over 30 years. He is 51 years old and his kidneys failed 3 years ago and he has been on home dialysis since that time. My grandmother and aunt were also on dialysis for a number of years. My aunt passed away last year as the kidney she had gotten in a transplant 12 years before had finally given up. Depending on how prevailent kidney disease runs in a person's family, they may not consider a sibling as a donor. My family has kidney disease as well as kidney failure due to the diabetes. If a person has had gestational diabetes, their chances for getting diabetes is significantly higher, so again not sure 100%, but that person may not be a good candidate either.
Best of luck to your family. I personally know what a toll this can take on the person who is ill as well as their family. There are a lot of great web sites out there. If you are interested I can pass them along to you.

P.S. - I'm not a doctor, but have experienced this first-hand with family.

I don't have any first hand information. I just wanted to say that I'm sorry to hear about your father.

I hope all goes well.
