15 July 2006: It is a communication to Muslims worldwide, requesting Muslims to assist the Mujahideen – those engaged in Islamic jihad and armed conflict –in various hotspots of fighting abroad. But there is something much different about this video and separate audio, the latter which is recorded in English by someone with a definite Middle Eastern accent that has caused analysts to look more carefully at this seven-minute, 26 second video and the English audio version that lasts just under 4 minutes.

It is this segment, occurring near the beginning of the audio version that caused the concern of our investigative analysts:

Voice of narrator: A year has passed since the blessed London raids, and the British government continues to mislead its people about the reasons and motivations behind that operation and the party responsible for it.

Shehzad Tanweer: In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

All praises are due to Allah, and may blessings and peace be upon His Messenger.

To the non-Muslims of Britain, you may wonder what you have done to deserve this. You are those who have voted in your government, who in turn have, and still, continue to this day, continue to oppress our mothers, children, brothers and sisters, from the East to the West, in Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq and Chechnya.

Your government has openly supported the genocide of over 150,000 innocent Muslims in Fallujah.

Narrator: Genocide in every sense of the word; bombing, destruction and demolition of houses over the heads of their occupants; cold-blooded murder of the innocent and defenceless inside mosques; this is Bush and Blair's democracy.

Iraqi man: Is this Bush's democratic solution for the Arab and Islamic people? Do I have to pay for his democracy with six lives? I don’t want this freedom, I don’t want this democracy. My brother and his children are dead. And here I am, as you can see, bloodied and wounded from the destruction which befell my house.

Narrator: But the crimes of the British didn’t begin in Iraq.

Sheikh Ayman Al Zawahiri: Britain, which helped topple the Ottoman state, handed Palestine to the Jews, and participated in the killing of Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq, and whose crimes continue to be seen in every corner of the Islamic world.

Shehzad Tanweer: You have offered financial and military support to the US and Israel in the massacre of our children in Palestine. You are directly responsible for the problems in Palestine and Afghanistan and Iraq to this day.

You have openly declared war on Islam and are the forerunners in the crusade against the Muslims.

Voice of Al Qaeda leader, Sheikh Osama bin Laden: Among the greatest of the issues which clearly display these concepts is that of Palestine. What oppression, assault and hatred could be more blatant than the Zionist/Crusader alliance taking a decision to hand Palestine over to the Jews for it to be their state, after carrying out massacres there and displaying many of its people, then bringing the Jews from various countries to settle them in Palestine? And this aggression and oppression has continued for more than nine decades and continues to this very day. And all attempts to regain our rights and demand justice and take revenge from the Israeli oppressor have been thwarted by the leadership of the Crusader/Zionist alliance by using what is called the right of veto.

Voice of narrator: This oppression, persecution and repression which is committed against the Islamic peoples has always been a motivation for the Ummah's youth to perform Jihad in Allah's path.

Al Zawahiri: Shehzad's motivation for going to the bases of Qaida al-Jihad was the repression which the British are perpetrating in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Palestine. And he [Tanweer] would frequently talk about Palestine, and about the backing that the British give the Jews, and the clear oppression which they commit against the Muslims.

Old aged Palestinian male civilian: I was sleeping, when at midnight I heard the loudspeakers ordering us to gather in the schoolyard. I dressed and went outside. On my way, there was a window like this one, about 1.5 meters away and overlooking the street. A soldier shot me from inside. I fell to the ground in shock. He told me, "Get up! Get up and go away!" I told him I couldn’t get up. He said, "You want to die?" Then he shot me here [pointing at his foot]. When I knew I was about to die, I got up. I don’t know what to say. [He begins wiping his tears].

As I walked down the street I saw everything had been demolished. I had nowhere to go, nowhere to walk except on rubble.

In 1948, we went through the same torture, but this time it is worse. All our life's work, our houses, our children: it all disappeared in an hour. Let Bush be pleased with his friend, the criminal and murderer, the father of Sabra and Shatila.

The world's conscience is like this: it turns a deaf ear. When a Jew is injured, Bush starts shouting and crying. He cries, "You slaughtered the Jews!" But if 100 million Arabs are killed, no problem. They don’t count. That's how life is.

There are no people on Earth who have done what the Jews have done. They demolish houses onto children. Someone throws a stone, and they bring a helicopter, cannon, F16 and tank. Where in the world has this happened? And the world plugs its ears so it can't hear. Where else can you find such oppression?

Narrator: And so to repel this oppression, Shehzad dedicated himself to training with passion and devotion, and received, along with the martyr Siddique Khan, focused and practical instruction in the manufacture of explosives and their use at the camps of Qaida al-Jihad, those camps whose inductees don’t need to score high averages nor pass entrance exams: all they need is ghayrah (jealousy) for their religion and Ummah and a love for Jihad and martyrdom in the path of Allah.

Shehzad Tanweer: We are over 100% dedicated to the cause of Islam. We love death the way you love life. I tell all you British citizens to stop your support to your lying British government, and to the so-called war on terror. And ask yourselves: why would thousands of men be ready to give their lives for the cause…

Oh Muslims, Allah the Exalted says in Sura (chapter) Nisa: " And what is wrong with you that you fight not in the Cause of Allah, and for those weak, ill-*treated and oppressed among men, women, and children, whose cry is: 'Our Lord! Rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from You one who will protect, and raise for us from You one who will help.'"

Al Zawahiri: And that's why Shehzad came to the bases of the Qaida al-Jihad group and spent a period of time with Muhammad Siddique. Both of them were seeking martyrdom and wished that they could carry out a martyrdom operation. They both were very insistent upon that, and if the brothers discussed something else, they would pay them no heed, because the goal for which they came to the bases of Qaida al-Jihad was the carrying out of a martyrdom operation. Between them was amazing love for the sake of Allah, and together they formed a great team, even though each of them was distinguished in some way from the other.

Narrator: This love for martyrdom in Allah's path has never been motivated by poverty, unemployment and emptiness, as some of the mercenary media try to portray it to us. Rather, the motivation behind it has always been love for Allah and love for His Messenger.

And the one who embarks on this path has full conviction that this work of his is one of the best acts of worship and best deeds in Allah's eyes, and anyone who scrutinizes the life of the martyr Shehzad sees that clearly.

Al Zawahiri: As for Shehzad Tanweer, may Allah have mercy upon him, he was well read in addition to being a lover of sports, and concerned about his physical fitness, and that's why he studied physical education at university. He had a passion for boxing, and although he was from a well-off family, his clothes and appearance did not convey that. And he, may Allah have mercy upon him, was diligent in tahajjud (night prayers) and infatuated with the Quran and would recite it often. If his brothers busied themselves with conversation, he would busy himself with the Quran. And he would contemplate what he would read of the Quran, and often he would pause at a particular verse, and then say to his brothers, "Look! This is exactly what is happening today."

Narrator: And you can find the effects of this contemplation of the verses of Allah's Wise Book and anxiety for this religion in the messages of the martyr Shehzad to his Muslim brothers.

Shehzad Tanweer: Oh Muslims of Britain, you, day in and day out, on your TV sets watch and hear about the oppression of the Muslims, from the East to the West. But yet you turn a blind eye and carry on with your lives as if you never heard anything, or as if it does not concern you. What is the matter with you that you turn back not to the religion that Allah the Exalted has chosen for you? You have preferred the dunyaa [the tangible commodities of the world] to Allah and His Messenger, and to the Hereafter, as Allah the Exalted in Sura Tawbah says: "Say: If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your kindred, the wealth that you have gained, the commerce in which you fear a decline, and the dwellings in which you delight… are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger, and striving hard and fighting in His Cause, then wait until Allah brings about His Decision (torment). And Allah guides not the people who are rebellious, disobedient to Allah."

Your duty is to Allah the Exalted and His Messenger, and to those who are weak and oppressed, as Allah the Exalted says in Sura Tawbah: "O you who believe! What is the matter with you, that when you are asked to march forth in His Cause that you cling heavily to the earth? Are you pleased with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? But little is the enjoyment of this world as compared with the Hereafter."

Oh Muslims of Britain, stand up and be counted. You are those who Allah the Exalted has honoured with Islam; and know that if you turn back from your religion Allah has no need for you, as Allah the Exalted in Sura Maidah says: "Oh you who believe! Whoever from among you turns back from his religion, Allah will bring a people whom He will love and they will love Him; humble towards the believers, stern towards the disbelievers, fighting in the Cause of Allah, and never afraid of the blame of the blamers. That is the Grace of Allah which He bestows on whom He wills. And Allah is All*-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All*-Knower."

Fight against the disbelievers, for it is but an obligation laid on you by Allah the Exalted, as Allah in Sura Baqarah says: "Fighting is ordained for you though you dislike it, and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know."

Narrator: The knights of London continued to train and plan for the operation, and the targets were identified with precision, so much so that even the names of the targeted stations held symbolic meaning and spiritual significance for the Crusader West.

And after completing their training and preparation, the knights departed for the field of operations.

Al Zawahiri: And they, may Allah have mercy upon them, returned to Britain, where they passed on what they had learned to their brothers and planned – with the guidance of Allah – their successful strike which sent Britain into a spin, even though the battle is still in its beginnings and the squadrons of the liberated heroes are racing to attain martyrdom and to respond to the aggression of the Crusaders.

Voice of Osama bin Laden: And from another perspective, the Mujahideen, by Allah's Grace, have been able to penetrate time after time all the security procedures undertaken by the oppressive countries of the alliance, as evidenced by what you have seen in terms of bombings in the capitals of the most important European states in this alliance of aggression.

Narrator: The operation was completed by the Grace of Allah, and the knights of the London raid made a volcano of Islamic anger erupt in the heart of the capital of the Cross.

And some cast doubt on the ability of the Mujahideen to carry out this tremendous feat, but such people pretended to forget the statement of Allah the Exalted: How often has a small force vanquished a big one, by Allah's will. And Allah is with those who persevere."

And the Mujahideen received news of the raid with cries of "Allah is the Greatest" and "There is god other than Allah", and by prostrating themselves before Allah in gratitude.

And as usual, the media of the aggressive, belligerent enemy and his agents began to chant that those targeted in this operation were innocent civilians.

Brother Azzam the American: It's crucial for Muslims to keep in mind that the Americans, the British and the other members of the coalition of terror have intentionally targeted Muslim civilians and civilian targets, both before as well as after September 11th, in both the second and first Iraq wars, as well as in Somalia, and Sudan and Afghanistan, just to give you a few examples. And they've done this with the support and backing of their populations and electorates.

I mean, even if there have been some feeble protests scattered here and there in the West, chiefly against the latest war in Iraq, are the same… the governments which started these wars have been re-elected by a majority of the popular vote. Their aggression against Afghanistan, which for Westerners and their mercenaries' sympathizers, is the least controversial of Bush and Blair's terrorist wars. They have targeted civilians for assassination and kidnapping.

They kidnapped any non-Afghans they found and shipped them off to Guantanamo, or worse. Many were handed over to the American and British backed despotic regimes of the Islamic world to be brutally interrogated… and with the blessing and support of that notorious Afghan killer Hamid Karzai, they've murdered thousands of Afghan civilians, as they slept in their beds, travelled on the roads, attended weddings and prayed at the mosques.

I know they've killed and maimed civilians in their strikes because I've seen it with my own eyes, my brothers have seen it, I've carried the victims in my arms; women, children, toddlers, babies in their mother's wombs. You name it, they've probably bombed it.

I could go on and on, and that's just Afghanistan. We haven't talked about American and British atrocities in the two Iraq wars. Let's take a look at the latest to be revealed:

In Mahmudiyah five American soldiers gang rape an Iraqi woman, and then to hide the evidence, murder her and three members of her family and burn her body… Then, when our Mujahideen take revenge on the unit who committed this outrage, and capture and execute two of its members, they're called terrorists, and Muslims are supposed to disown them or face the consequences.

And where's Britain in all of this? Coaching them on the sidelines, huh, and lending a helping hand whenever possible. I'd like to remind those who ludicrously claim that Britain treats Muslims better than America that Britain is the one who taught America how to kill and oppress Muslims in the first place, by drawing on experience gained during hundreds of years of blood-soaked colonialist history. And lest we forget, Britain is today, besides prosecuting its occupation of southern Iraq, the one heading the NATO occupation of Afghanistan, and relieving the blooded and bruised Americans in the south and east of the country. And we haven’t mentioned the fact that these actions of the Americans and British are prohibited by the same international laws and treaties which they hypocritically claim to uphold and protect, and which they impose and others, even as they themselves violate them with impunity. And nor have we mentioned their unconditional support for the butchery and terrorism of their dear friend and ally Israel, which I imagine everyone knows about.

So after all the atrocities committed by America, and Britain, and their allies, which constitute terrorism in every sense of the word, you want us to observe restraints and civility in our response, or better yet, not respond at all?! You want us to target their soldiers and tanks only, which as we have seen, still makes us terrorists in their eyes.

And why should we target their military only? Because to do otherwise would violate the precepts of that idol, that false god called international law, which, as we have conclusively shown, they themselves violate. No thanks, we have our own law, the law of God, who says in His Book: [Recites in Arabic then translates] "And if you punish, let your punishment be proportionate to the wrong that has been done to you."

And we have the Sunnah, the example of our Prophet, peace be upon him. Who erected catapults against the people of Taif, despite the presence of women and children, non-combatants among them, and who excused the inadvertent killing of the unbelievers' women and children in night raids. And I'm not saying that we should go and slaughter their women and children one by one like they did ours at Haditha, and Ishaqi and Mahmudiyah, and God knows where else, even if some of our legal experts have permitted that.

And even if it's hard to imagine that any compassionate person could see pictures, just pictures, of what the crusaders did to those children, and not want to go on a shooting spree at the Marine's housing facilities and Camp Pendleton… But what I am saying is that when we bomb their cities and civilians like they bomb ours, or destroy their infrastructure and means of transportation like they destroy ours, or kidnap their non-combatants like they kidnap ours, no sane Muslim should shed tears for them, and they should blame no one but themselves. Because they are the ones who started this dirty war and they are the ones who will end it: By ending their aggression against Islam and Muslims, by pulling out of our region, and by keeping their hands out of our affairs. And until, and unless, they do that, neither Forest Gate style police raids nor Belmarsh or Guantanamo prison cells, nor the mosques and Imam's advisory council will be able to prevent the Muslims from exacting revenge on behalf of their persecuted Muslim brothers and sisters.

Narrator: And some try to put forward that the Western peoples have no part to play in the crimes which their governments commit against the Islamic peoples.

Al Zawahiri: Remember, oh people of Britain, and remember oh peoples of the Crusader Alliance, that you are supporting and serving the governments which have committed crimes against us for centuries. Didn’t the martyr – as we consider him to be – Muhammad Siddique Khan, Allah have mercy on him, say to you, "Your democratically elected governments continuously perpetrate atrocities against my people all over the world, and your support of them makes you directly responsible, just as I am directly responsible for protecting and avenging my Muslim brothers and sisters."

Voice of Bin Laden: What business do the people of Europe have with this war which made them race to unite under Bush's banner? They haven’t merely failed to criticize him or restrain him – on the contrary, the number of European troops under NATO has increased in Afghanistan. So what is their concern? The war is a joint responsibility of the peoples and their governments, and the war goes on, and the peoples renew their allegiance to their rulers and politicians, and send their sons to the armies to fight us, and continue the material and moral support, and our countries are burned and our houses bombed and our people killed, and no one cares about us.

Narrator: And this indifference of the Western peoples is clearly evident in their failure to do anything about the deception, lying and misdirection perpetrated by their governments.

Al Zawahiri: Your leaders are deceiving you and telling you that the problem will end with the killing of Bin Laden and will be solved by the elimination of al-Qaida, and they are lying and intentionally misleading you when they hide from you the biggest fact, the fact that pursues them and from which they flee, the fact that threatens their profits, interests and affluence: the fact that you aren't facing an individual, group, or movement, but rather, a sweeping Jihadi awakening in a united Mujahid Ummah.

The ignoring of this fact shall lead you into pitfalls and disasters, just as nations before you perished and passed away because they shut their eyes to the facts and ground realities.

The Truth, Exalted is He, says, "As for Ad, they behaved arrogantly on earth, against the truth, and said, 'Who is superior to us in strength?' What! Did they not see that Allah, Who created them, was superior to them in strength, but they continued to reject our signs! So we sent against them a furious wind in ill-fated days, that We might give them a taste of the punishment of humiliation in this life. But the punishment of the Hereafter will be more humiliating still, and they will not be helped. As for Thamud, We gave them guidance, but they preferred blindness to guidance, so the thunderbolt of the punishment of humiliation seized them for what they had earned."

You were able at one point to defeat the Ottoman state due to the spread of weaknesses and flaws in its structure, and you divided the Islamic world between you and your partners in crime and handed Palestine to the Jews, and then – after World War II – you were inherited by America, who thrusts its claws into the body of our Ummah [people, nation] to pillage, plunder and repress. But it is imperative that you know that this is a stage which has passed and gone by, and that you are facing a new reality and prevailing truth: the truth of the Muslim Ummah's Jihadi awakening. So whether you pretend not to see it or not, you shall not escape from the law of destiny and history. Al-Mutanabi says:

Life is serene to the ignoramus or one unaware
Of what has passed and what is expected
And it is serene to he who deceives his self
And tortures it with impossibilities and so it craves

There is no solution for you other than reaching an understanding with the Muslim Ummah for the exchange of interests and benefits.

As for shutting your eyes to the facts and the aggression, pillage and plunder, that will only increase the number of coffins returning to you and increase the damage to your economy.

Shehzad Tanweer: What you have witnessed now is only the beginning of a series of attacks which, God willing, will intensify and continue until you pull out all of your troops from Afghanistan and Iraq; until you stop all financial and military support to the US and Israel, and until you release all Muslims prisoners from Belmarsh and your other concentration camps.

And know that if you fail to comply with this, then know that this war will never stop and that we are ready to give our lives 100 times over for the cause of Islam.

You will never experience peace until our children in Palestine, our mothers and sisters in Kashmir, our brothers in Afghanistan and Iraq feel peace.

Narrator: And the Mujahideen strikes will continue everywhere until the occupied lands of the Muslims are liberated and their usurped rights are returned.

And the leaders of the Mujahideen and the martyrdom-seeking heroes will continue to exhort the Ummah to perform Jihad in Allah's path.

Al Zawahiri: As for my brothers the Muslims everywhere, I affirm to you that Jihad is the only way to obtain our rights, restore our dignity, and establish our Caliphate.

And I mention specifically my brothers in Palestine, and I say to them that the Crusader West in its entirety is hostile to you, and all of them support Israel against you, and the reason is that you are Muslims. Had you been a Christian nation, the Jews would not have been able to do to you what they are doing.

So you must hold fast to your Islam and Tawheed, and neither give up the governance of the Shari'ah, nor daub legitimacy onto the secular, submissive sellers of Palestine, nor lay down your weapons, nor abandon so much as a sand grain of Palestine, nor accept any referendum on Palestine, because Palestine is not for bargaining. Palestine was a land of Islam, and its exclusion from the occupation of the infidels is an individual obligation. And all of Palestine is for the Muslims, and there is no difference between Palestine '48 and Palestine '67: all of it is Palestine and all of it is for the Muslims, and we shall fight for it and every land occupied by the infidels until we liberate them all, with Allah's permission, starting with Spain and ending with Iraq.

Bin Laden: Oh people of Islam, don’t be terrified by the enemy and his large number of men and equipment, for victory comes from Allah. And the enemy is, by Allah's grace, in a severe predicament, and your Mujahid sons' engagements with the American enemy in Afghanistan and Iraq have broken his prestige, weakened his strength, bled his power and defied him, which has made him tarry and blunder in taking any significant decision about attacking the countries which free themselves from his domination and rule, and he has become like an owner of a tank which has run out of ammunition and cares only the fool with its roar.

Former al-Qaida leader in Iraq, Abu Musab Al Zarqawi: My precious Ummah: we in Iraq are a stone's throw from the destination of the Messenger of Allah's – peace be upon him – Night Journey.

We are fighting in Iraq, while our eyes are on Jerusalem, which will only be brought back by a Quran which guides and a sword which brings victory. And your Lord is sufficient as a Guide and Helper.

And time and experience and trials and troubles have proven that you have no one – after Allah the Exalted – other than your sons the Mujahideen. They are your fortified fortress, heavy armour and beating heart. They delight at your happiness and cry at your sadness. They stay awake at night for you, and they are protective of you. Their hearts break out of pain for your condition, and their constant concern expresses itself, thus: Oh Allah, lift the oppression and injustice from my Ummah. Oh Allah, bring back the majesty and honour of my Ummah.

Shehzad Tanweer: Oh Muslims of Britain and the world, the dunyaa is just an affiliating enjoyment, and unto Allah the Exalted will be your return. Obey Allah and His Messenger, peace be upon him, if you are indeed believers.

Fight against the oppressors, the oppressive British regime, and the other oppressive infidel forces that must… they are forcing Muslims to… and in order to annihilate them. As Allah the Exalted says in Sura Nisa: "Those who believe fight in the Cause of Allah, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of Shaitan [Satan]. So fight you against the friends of Shaitan; ever feeble indeed is the plot of Shaitan."

So fight, fight against the enemies of Allah. Our blood flows across the earth. Muslim blood has become cheap. Where are those who will avenge the blood of our children in Palestine, and the rapes and massacres of our sisters in Kashmir?

As for those of you who have been affected by this reminder, give your lives for Allah the Exalted's Cause, for in truth, this is the best transaction, as Allah the Exalted in Sura Tawbah says: "Verily, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties for the price that theirs shall be the Paradise. They fight in Allah's Cause, so they kill and are killed. It is a promise of truth which is binding on Him in the Torah and the Bible and the Quran. And who is truer to his promise than Allah? Then rejoice in the bargaining that which you have concluded. That is the supreme success."

We ask Allah the Exalted to protect Sheikh Osama [bin Laden] and those who are close to him, and those who are fighting in Allah's Cause across the earth. We ask Allah to lift the oppression of the Muslims, and to hasten the release of the Muslim prisoners and scholars across the earth.

We ask Allah the Exalted to protect Sheikh Abu Musab Al Zarqawi and those who are with him, and grant a near victory in Iraq. Oh Allah, grant us martyrdom in your Cause and accept us among the righteous on the Day we shall return to you.

Orange County Man Rises in Al Qaeda Ranks

'Azzam the American,' or Adam Gadahn, has moved from translator to propagandist.

Two years ago, no one knew quite what to make of Adam Gadahn.

While many in the U.S. intelligence community saw the angry Muslim convert from Orange County as dangerous, plenty of counterterrorism officials viewed the pudgy 25-year-old as a bit player on the world stage of jihadists.

No longer.

Though the young man who has appeared on four Al Qaeda videotapes and now calls himself Azzam the American is still not deemed part of Al Qaeda's operational command, recent interviews with counterterrorism officials suggest that Gadahn has gone from a valuable translator to an invaluable propagandist for the international terrorist network.

"It is not some masked guy with a rifle saying, 'Death to America,' " one senior U.S. law enforcement official said. "It is an American. And his target audience is the U.S."

Gadahn's newfound stature is underscored by a sealed federal indictment in Los Angeles that, law enforcement sources say, will charge him with supporting terrorism. It also comes as new details are surfacing about his time in Orange County and connections to extremists.

The new attention to Gadahn reflects his ascent in one of the world's most impenetrable terrorist groups. Indeed, although a handful of Americans have been convicted or still face charges of conspiring as terrorists, none has had a more astounding trajectory into Al Qaeda's inner circle than Gadahn.

From journeying to Pakistan to meeting with Osama bin Laden and later self-proclaimed Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, Gadahn quickly established himself as an American entrusted by Al Qaeda's leadership, counterterrorism officials say. Two of the four videotapes in which he has appeared also featured Al Qaeda's second-in-command, Ayman Al-Zawahiri.

"Increasingly, the stature of his statements shows that he not only has credibility as an information operative for Al Qaeda … but if you look at it through the lens of Al Qaeda spreading its message, then he is absolutely an instrumental player," said another counterterrorism official who has watched Gadahn's ascent for years.

"I mean, he is now making statements with Al-Zawahiri, who is the No. 2 and the tactician. And [Gadahn] is right there with him at critical periods of time," said the official, who like others in government spoke on condition of anonymity because of the anticipated criminal case against Gadahn.

The grandson of a Jewish doctor, the young man was raised as Adam Pearlman on a goat farm in the hills of southwestern Riverside County by parents who had eclectic religious tastes and shunned the modern world.

At 14, his spiritual journey took him to the Islamic Center of Orange County, where he fell under the influence of two radical Muslims, Khalil Deek and Hisham Diab, both naturalized U.S. citizens.

Diab, an Egyptian, owned an accounting business, and Deek, a Palestinian, repaired computers. They lived in upstairs apartments across from each other in a complex near Little Gaza, a stretch of Arab-owned shops, restaurants and other businesses on Brookhurst Street in Anaheim.

"Deek and Diab met him at the mosque and [Diab] brought him home like a lost dog," said Saraah Olson, who was married to Diab at the time but divorced him in 1996. "He was hungry and [Diab] asked me to give him something to eat. That's how it began, innocently enough. Then they begin teaching the kid their version of Islam."

Haitham "Danny" Bundakji, president of the Islamic Society of Orange County, said Diab and Gadahn had extremist views that caused him to bar them from the mosque. "They believed that Muslims like me who reached out to Christians and Jews are infidels. They had a warped interpretation of Islam," Bundakji said.

Friends and family members said Diab and Deek were followers of radical cleric Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, the so-called blind sheikh who is now serving a life sentence in federal prison for his role in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

Diab and Deek hosted Abdel Rahman in their apartments during his lecture tours of Orange County mosques in 1992 and 1993. Olson said she cooked dinner for the Egyptian sheikh. A relative of Deek, who asked not to be identified, said Abdel Rahman stayed in Deek's apartment for two days during one visit.

Olson said Gadahn never met the radical cleric, but she said he too was a follower. According to Olson, Abdel Rahman would call Diab and others in Orange County from prison on Sunday afternoon to deliver fiery sermons that were recorded.

In 1995, the year Gadahn converted to Islam, Diab formed Charity Without Borders, which according to state records was founded to "provide an education and humanitarian aid to poor and needy people in USA and in other countries."

The nonprofit's records list Diab as its chief financial officer. In April 1999, Gadahn was added as the charity's secretary. His name is spelled "Gaden" on the form, which also has a phony Santa Ana address for him.

Olson said the $150,000 raised by Charity Without Borders was sent to extremist groups in the Middle East. Deek's relative said he wrote a proposal for the charity that led to one $50,000 grant from the state of California, which he said was supposed to be used for an oil recycling awareness program directed at minority communities.

Two weeks after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, California's Department of Justice shut down Charity Without Borders and began an investigation.

U.S. terrorism officials believe that Deek and Gadahn traveled separately to Pakistan in 1998. According to the 9/11 Commission report, by early 1999 Deek was living in Peshawar, Pakistan.

The commission report also said Deek was a close associate in Pakistan of Abu Zubeida, now held at the military's Guantanamo Bay detention facility and identified by the CIA as a senior aide to Osama bin Laden.

Deek's relative who spoke to The Times said Jordanian officials told the family that Deek had a joint bank account with Zubeida in Peshawar.

The senior U.S. law enforcement official said it was Deek who sent Gadahn to Pakistan, where he meet Zubeida. From there, the official said, Gadahn found his way into Al Qaeda's training camps and, ultimately, introductions to its Al Qaeda's leadership.

"Bin Laden was particularly interested in meeting American converts," the official said.

In December 1999, Deek was extradited to Jordan, where he was charged with involvement in the millennium plot to bomb tourist hotels in that country.

Two years later, the charges against him were dropped. He returned to Pakistan in May 2001, the official said.

That same year, Diab left the U.S., according to Olson, his ex-wife, and hasn't been heard from since.

Three years later, in May 2004, the Justice Department and FBI first identified Gadahn as an alleged extremist and Al Qaeda member. Then-Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft said he was an associate of Zubeida.

Brian Jenkins, a terrorism expert at the Rand Corp., said that although Gadahn has clearly become a "key communicator" for Al Qaeda in the two years since, his effectiveness in reaching and radicalizing other Westerners remains to be seen.

"There is no question he is an articulate communicator," said Jenkins. "The question is whether there is a significant audience for that significant message."

The first Gadahn videotape surfaced in October 2004, months after Ashcroft revealed his Al Qaeda affiliation. At the time, U.S. officials didn't even know for sure that he was the menacing, masked figure making threats against the U.S., although the CIA said he was the most likely suspect.

In that hourlong tape, released just before the U.S. presidential election, a young man hidden behind a head scarf identified himself as "Azzam the American" and said American "streets will run with blood."

Gadahn appeared in another video in September 2005, on the eve of the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

In that tape, he invoked the name of the most infamous Sept. 11 attacker, Mohammed Atta, and warned of new attacks in the U.S. and Australia.

"Yesterday, London and Madrid," he said, referring to two cities then recently bombed by terrorists. "Tomorrow, Los Angeles and Melbourne…. "

Then, this year, Gadahn appeared in the two videotapes also featuring Zawahiri.

Now, even those who once doubted Gadahn's importance say they and others were wrong in rejecting the possibility that an American could play a key role for Al Qaeda.

"That," the counterterrorism official said, "was the wrong assumption."

Gone Bad In O.C.

Adam Gadahn grew up in la-la land, knowing he could be anything he wanted. Of all he might've chosen from his banquet of opportunity, he picked al-Qaida. Now he's charged with treason. It's high time.

Like John Walker Lindh of hot-tubbing Marin County, Calif., Gadahn grew up in sybaritic Orange and Riverside counties, a garden setting with vast opportunities most people in the world can only dream of. His self-absorbed hippie parents reared him permissively and now have no clue what went wrong.

Amid fast-food joints, CDs, flush toilets and lots of pricey toys, Gadahn, a one-time death-metal rock aficionado, grew a beard, donned a turban and declared himself a radical Muslim.

Costume on, Gadahn hooked up with al-Qaida, aiming to destroy the rest of us, too.

Now hiding in Pakistan, he is uniquely placed to aid terrorists as other wannabes cannot.

Gadahn is tech-savvy and knows U.S. culture. He understands how to use leftist language to appeal to American quislings, and can explain writers like Daniel Pipes and Michael Scheuer — and maybe flush toilets, too — to al-Qaida.

That's bad enough. He's also taped threats to Americans, encouraged al-Qaida recruitment and worked to demoralize America's military and give al-Qaida an edge against U.S. troops.

Gadahn should have been charged with treason in 2004, when he first mockingly looked into al-Qaida's Web cam and threatened to destroy Los Angeles. "Yesterday, London and Madrid. Tomorrow, Los Angeles and Melbourne, Allah willing," Gadahn warned.

That wasn't all he was up to. FBI chief Robert Mueller testified that Gadahn was implicated in an al-Qaida plot to blow up gas stations around New York and Baltimore in 2003 or earlier.

Back on the al-Qaida video circuit, Gadahn appeared smirking beside al-Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri to threaten Americans. "Escape from the unbelieving army and join the winning side," he said. "Time is running out, so make the right choice before it's too late and you meet the dismal fate of thousands before you."

With no one charged with treason in 50 years, we've seen a long slippery slope of enemy aid. It began with the likes of Tom Hayden and Jane Fonda, who delivered North Vietnamese propaganda as U.S. troops fought and died in Vietnam. Then draft dodgers were rewarded (by Jimmy Carter) with amnesty. Today, consorting with the enemy seems to be consequence-free.

Gadahn is the logical outcome of an inability to distinguish free speech from treason. A public trial for treason should correct that.

FBI: AMERICAN AL QAEDA IS A 'TOOL'

A top FBI official in an interview today commented on Adam Yahiye Gadahn's rise as Al Qaeda's most prolific vee-jay of violence next to No. 2 video thug Dr. Ayman Al-Zawahiri, the deputy of Osama Bin Laden. With our colleague Lara Jakes Jordan of the Associated Press, The Mouth quizzed Miller about the emergence of Al Qaeda's Jewish-American spokesman, known as "Azzam al-Amriki," who grew up in California, converted to Islam, was recruited by Al Qaeda and was indicted last year in Los Angeles for treason and giving material support to terrorism.

"It’s difficult to speculate about his role" beyond issuing propaganda videos, Miller said. "He certainly has, if not direct reach, close connections to the highest levels of Al Qaeda because that’s where the messages he’s delivering are coming from."

Miller called Gadahn, 28, a "tool" of Al Qaeda --- but Gadahn has more reach into the U.S. than Zawahiri, an English-speaker who prefers to address the world in Arabic when he looks into a video camera lens.

"Al Qaeda, if they didn’t have Adam Gadahn, would find someone else who spoke English to deliver those messages. I don’t think that Adam Gadahn is that personally important to the message as is his mode of delivery. I don't think he's that terribly significant as an individual," Miller said.

But, switching gears, Miller acknowledged that Gadahn is a potentially effective means for Al Qaeda to inspire homegrown terrorists in the U.S. "Zawahiri speaks perfectly good English and can do those messages in English, ... but Gadahn is a special tool because it's not just that he speaks English but he's an American, and that has a different subliminal texture for Al Qaeda," he said.

Personally I don't think the flakey and self-conscious Gadahn is at all effective "to inspire homegrown terrorists". And he never will be effective. It is nice to know that Gadahn is the best that al-Qaida can do in that department.

* نيويورك من جديد: لأنها عصب اقتصادي+ إثبات بأن الله معنا وأن المجاهدين قادرون على الضرب مرات ومرات.
* لوس أنجيلوس: لأنها أهم مدينة على الساحل الغربي للولايات الملحدة.
* فلوريدا: لأنها منطقة تجمع على الساحل الشرقي بالإضافة لوجود مركز كينيدي للبحوث الفضائية.
- يمكن زيادة العدد حسب الطلب بحول الله ليشمل مثلاً -طالما أننا نحلم ومن يعلم إلا الله بانبلاج الحق-:

1* العمليات الإغاثية من قبل الجيش الأمريكي لشعبه المنكوب المنكوس[تذكرون جندي الله -إن صح التعبير- إعصار كاترينا!!].
2* نقص حاد وفشل ذريع في سد ميزانية الجيش، يؤدي بإذن الله لأمور منها:
ا- هروب عدد من الجنود من الجيش وعدم إرادتهم للعودة لتلك البلاد، مما يعني بقاءهم عرضة إما للقتل في البلاد التي ترفع فيها الشعائر الإسلامية، أو دخولهم في دين الله وافرين [تذكروا كم أسلم بعد غزوات سبتمبر!!].
ب- حصول تمرد على نطاق واسع وانشقاقات داخلية بين الجنود والضباط وهذا مطلوب مثل غزوة الأحزاب.
ج- عدم القدرة على التسلح حتى بالوقود لطيران الطائرات بسبب الانكسار الاقتصادي.

ويتسم هذا العصر الذهبي بما يلي بحول الله:
* نفرة عدد كبير من الشباب المخلصين الصادقين ومناصرتهم للعراق.
* بداية التوسع في تطبيق شرع الله ليشمل: تحرير جزيرة محمد -صلى الله عليه وسلم- من نفوذ آل سلول + تحرير بلاد شرقي نهر الأردن من الأسرة الأمريكية الحاكمة! وتنظيف بلاد الإسلام من الطواغيت.
* الزحف الكبير باتجاه فلسطين الحبيبة مع النصرة الداخلية ممن يكون موجوداً بإذن الله تعالى من أبناء الطائفة المنصورة على أكناف فلسطين حرسها الله، وبظهور قيادات صادقة مع الله، بعد تلاشي أحلام الناس بالمظاهر المزيفة للحركات المتمسلمة وعودة الأمة بصدق لكتاب ربها وسنة نبيها -صلى الله عليه وسلم- وتحكيمها في الحياة.
* تحرير بيت المقدس بعد معارك عنيفة وطاحنة ينطق فيها الحجر والشجر إلا الغرقد -كما في صحيح مسلم- بإذن الله تعالى.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union states have started sharing
monitoring of militant Web sites, including sites linked to al-
Qaeda, a draft statement agreed by the bloc's ambassadors on
Wednesday shows.

Police say the Internet has taken on huge importance for militant
groups, enabling them to share know-how and spread propaganda to a
mass audience, and to plan operations.

"The (EU) member states have started to work on joint projects. At
present some member states under German lead responsibility are
sharing the task of analyzing al Qaeda's media department as-Sahab,"
the draft prepared for the next meeting of EU justice and interior
ministers in June said.

Al Qaeda has its own media arm, as-Sahab, whose output has included
a series of statements by its senior leaders.

The EU police agency Europol is building an information portal to
allow exchange of information on militant Web sites monitoring, the
draft said.

The portal is to include a list of links of monitored Web sites,
statements by terrorist organizations, and details on experts
checking the web in EU countries, including their language
competence and technical expertise. Expert meetings will also be
organized.

Western security analysts say al Qaeda and its offshoots have been
very adept at using new media, publishing footage of violent
executions and attacks on British forces in Iraq on the Internet
within hours of them happening.

"Internet use plays a major role in the logistic, operational and
communication network of terrorist organizations, " the statement said

"Terrorists use the Internet not only as a means to communicate and
spread propaganda, but also to radicalize, recruit and train
terrorists, to spread instructions on how to carry out concrete
offences and to transfer covert information, " it said.
