GOP LEADERS TO LAUNCH NEW 'LEAK' PROBE; INFO TO WASH POST 'DAMAGED NATIONAL SECURITY'
Tue Nov 08 2005 11:36:31 ET
Sources tell Drudge that early this afternoon House Speaker Hastert and Senate Majority Leader Frist will announce a bicameral investigation into the leak of classified information to the WASHINGTON POST regarding the “black sites” where high value al Qaeda terrorists are being held and interrogated.
MORE
Said one Hill source: “Talk about a leak that damaged national security! How will we ever get our allies to cooperate if they fear that their people will be targeted by al Qaeda.”
According to sources, the WASHINGTON POST story by Dana Priest (Wednesday November 2), revealed highly classified information that has already done significant damage to US efforts in the War on Terror.

This is just too rich. Leaking CIA Agents names, now secret prison locations
Senator Lott tells CNN he believes Republican leaked info on CIA jails
11/08/2005 @ 3:40 pm
Filed by RAW STORY
Senator Trent Lott (R-MS) told CNN's Ed Henry Tuesday afternoon that he believed it was a Republican senator who gave information about secret CIA jails abroad to the Washington Post, RAW STORY can report.
Lott said that much of the information contained in the Post report -- which stated that the U.S. was holding terrorist suspects in secret CIA jails overseas -- was discussed at a meeting of Republican senators last Tuesday.
The revelation appears to torpedo the political gambit of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) and House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) who called on the Senate and House intelligence committees to investigate who leaked the information to the Post.
The Post story cited as sources "U.S. and foreign officials familiar with the arrangement."

CNN's Ed Henry: "Trent Lott stunned reporters by declaring that this subject was actualy discussed at a Senate Republican luncheon, Republican senators only, last tuesday the day before the story ran in the Washington Post. Lott noted that Vice President Cheney was also in the room for that discussion and Lott said point blank "a lot of it came out of that room last tuesday, pointing to the room where the lunch was held in the capitol." He added of senators "we can't keep our mouths shut." He added about the vice president, "He was up here last wek and talked up here in that room right there in a roomful of nothing but senators and every word that was said in there went right to the newspaper." He said he believes when all is said and done it may wind up as an ethics investigation of a Republican senator, maybe a Republican staffer as well. Senator Frist's office not commenting on this development. The Washington Post not commenting either."

VIDEO: Frist Leak Probe Backfires
This morning, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) and House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) wrote a letter to intelligence committee chairmen about the recent leak of information to the Washington Post about secret CIA detention centers in Europe.
In the letter, Frist and Hastert claimed the leaks “could have long-term and far-reaching damaging and dangerous consequences (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/08/politics/08cnd-leak.html?hp&ex=1131512400&en=f30d7f0b550b4ed8&ei=5094&partner=homepage)” for the security of the United States, and warned of a “dangerous trend” of leaking “that, if not addressed swiftly and firmly, likely will worsen.”
But today, in an off-camera meeting with reporters, Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS) revealed that the leak likely came from a Senator or Senate staffer who attended a GOP-only meeting with Vice President Dick Cheney last week, where the detention centers were discussed.

Good question...the only problems that could arise from it being made public that they exist would be if their existence were illegal in the first place...and if the CIA is running illegal prisons on our behalf, I want to know about it...
That said, there could be other facets to this that we haven't considered...we don't know everything that the CIA knows, and they apparently thought enough of this leak to ask the Justice department to investigate it...

It also forces the CIA to request the DOJ for an investigation. Seems more important than you're willing to accept.
I'm sure the foreign nations involved in this are simply thrilled at the leak, and can't wait to assist the US in the future when we require it.
Then again....if it's not important, no one will be investigated or indicted in the near future.

As I said, I support the investigation into these leaks.
If it turns out the information leaked was that the US was engaged in something illegal (which I am not claiming here), then I would say that the leaks should be justified, under some sort of whistleblower protection.
Otherwise, prosecute the bastards. Washington seems to feel that information marked "classified" is just a big joke. If that's the case then the information shouldnt' be classified.

Too funny. Hastert and Frist make a big show of calling for an investigation into a leak allegedly affecting national security -- the locations of secret "black site" torture prisons. And then -- BOOM!!! Lott just said, Tuesday afternoon, that he thinks it was a GOP Senator who leaked the info to the Washington Post last week. He says the details had been discussed at a GOP Senators-only meeting last week, and that many of those details made it into the WaPo story.
Money quote from Lott; "We can not remain silent. We have met the enemy, and it is us."
All just reported on CNN. We are, folks, witnessing the full-on implosion of the national Republican Party. And not a second too soon.
CNN now. Ed Henry:

You think that the interrogation techniques used in these prisons do not involve torture? How can you say that given the recent events in Bagram Air Base Prison in Afghanistan and Abu Gharib? How can you say that when Bush himself is threatening to veto a bill to ensure that CIA agents are allowed to torture whoever they want?

Senator Seeks to Defer Probe of CIA Prison Leak
By Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, November 10, 2005; A04
The chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence told Senate leaders yesterday that Congress should hold off on a probe of the disclosure of classified information on secret prisons to The Washington Post until the Justice Department completes its own inquiry.
Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) said he will "respectfully" request that Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) back off a strongly worded request that a bicameral investigation into the disclosure be convened immediately. Frist spokeswoman Amy Call said the majority leader had not decided how to respond. "He always takes what his chairmen say into consideration," she said.
Frist and House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) surprised both Roberts and House intelligence committee Chairman Peter Hoekstra (R-Mich.) with a joint letter demanding a House-Senate inquiry after the Nov. 2 publication of a Post article detailing a web of secret prisons in Eastern Europe and elsewhere, maintained by the CIA to detain suspected terrorists.
The CIA general counsel's office also has notified the Justice Department that a release of classified information took place in connection with The Post's report. After the CIA details what it sees as the damage done by the article, Justice prosecutors will determine whether a criminal investigation is warranted.
Asked how long that could take, Roberts joked, "Decades," indicating he is in no rush to convene his own inquiry. Hoekstra said he has not decided how to proceed. Motleys note: What a bunch of fucking scumbags!
After months of partisan charges over the White House release of CIA operative Valerie Plame's name and false information on Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, disclosure of classified information has become an issue among Republicans.
Hoekstra said some Republican lawmakers were livid when a top administration intelligence officer inadvertently released the annual budget for U.S. intelligence operations, a figure that is classified and closely held by lawmakers who draft the budget.
At an intelligence conference last week in San Antonio, Mary Margaret Graham, deputy director of national intelligence, said the annual intelligence budget is $44 billion, a slip witnessed and recounted by a U.S. News & World Report writer.
Keeping the figure secret was a contentious issue as Congress retooled the intelligence structure after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, said Hoekstra, who battled to maintain the budget figure's classification.
Some lawmakers want to see disciplinary action against Graham. Hoekstra said he personally raised concerns with Director of National Intelligence John D. Negroponte.

The guy is nothing if he's not a bold faced liar. He promised to make that Phase II investigation of the Iraq war bogus intelligence manipulation "a high priority"
That was a year ago.

Yeah right, and he's still dragging his fucking feet on it. And now this. The balls on this guy are UNBELIEVABLE. But the worst part about it is that this cocksucker was re-elected AFTER canceling the Phase 2 investigation. That's why I have NO faith in the American people bunch of stupid fucking lemmings that they are.

No.. that's not true
The agreement with Sen. Rockefeller (the ranking Dem on that Committee) was to do PHASE I (which judged the quality of the intelligence) before the election in 2004, but leave Phase II (investigating how the Bush Administration used or misused that intelligence) until AFTER the election..
Then in Jan of 2005, just two month after the election, Roberts comes out and says, "well yeah.. I SAID it was a priority, but I don't think it matters now..we're not doing it"
Up until two weeks ago when Harry Reid outmaneuvered Frist and forced the issue, that was the case.

At least it was, when Republicans were in charged. .The American people put an end to that , however.
