What is it? A man reading poetry?

What is it? A man reading poetry?That's right, but Abu Yahya al-Libi is no ordinary poetaster. He is one of the four Bagram escapees, senior Qaida, and wanted bigtime.
Around 4:40, while going on about the Jews, he mentions Sharm al-Sheikh, in the Sinai, where Muslim terrorists killed a bunch of random tourists.
Around 14:30 he lists the names of "martyrs" to whom the next poem is dedicated; the names include Yahya Ayash (a Hamas bomb maker) and Abu Anas ash-Shami (a Syrian Qaida and former student of Maqdisi who got killed in Iraq), plus two Afghans whose names I do not recognize.
Later he mentions the "jihad" in Chechnya and refers to bin Ladin as the founder or originator of jihad.

I think this video was made in tribal Pakistan. The small group of rather juvenile armed listeners could be on their way to Afghanistan (getting a pep talk about other jihadis who went before them) or the scene could simply be staged to make it look like a group of jihadis in Afghanistan or on their way there.

IntelCenter has just released the "al-Qaeda Messaging Statistics (QMS) v1.8". The report provides a baseline for understanding al-Qaeda's as-Sahab Institute for Media Production messaging efforts in terms of its focus, resource allocation and ultimately al-Qaeda's messaging strategy. It contains a statistical breakout of as-Sahab releases from 2002 to 11 Sep. 2006. It is a working document and frequent updates will be issued over the near future.

Forget Katie Couric. It's the Evening News With Al-Qaida!

The last video from al-Qaida commemorating their Sept. 11 attacks contained a stunning revelation: Osama bin Laden's No. 2, Ayman al-Zawahri, is hiding out at a public library. Or a Barnes & Noble.

Or perhaps As-Saha, al-Qaida's media wing, set up the stacked-bookshelf backdrop to try to gain credibility by mimicking think-tank brainiacs.

Al-Qaida's production values have evolved since the terrorist group traded in its shaky HandyCam for something slicker, and the proliferation of radical Islamist Web sites happily airs and distributes their latest tours de force. Hence the creation of the Global Islamic Media Front, which last fall was advertising on the Internet for martyrs-slash-employees to help put together al-Qaida's Web statements and video productions. (No word on whether they pay in accordance with Jihadists Guild standards.)

And al-Zawahri has, in this time, progressed from starring in crude shots as a mousy cave dweller to the Ted Koppel of terrorists, commanding the camera as As-Sahab tests a variety of set designs to accompany the call to jihad. In April, al-Zawahri spewed his rhetoric under poor lighting before a backdrop that looked like Granny's 50-year-old curtains. By June, he embraced a stark black backdrop with strong lighting and the traditional gun propped by his side, a school-portrait approach with a microphone clipped on his crisp gray shirt as if he was an "Oprah" guest. Two days later he seemed to have hired a new director, as he was eulogizing the newly bombed Abu Musab al-Zarqawi on a Moroccan-toned set with a newscast-style picture of the dead terrorist - with soft edges and Zarqawi smiling like a terrorist version of Jerry's Kids -- over his shoulder.

By the end of last month, As-Sahab had apparently hired a seasoned producer, as al-Zawahri's sermon set looked like it was ripped off "60 Minutes." Large posterboard photos of illustrious terrorists and the World Trade Center exploding were lined up along a black background, gently lit by modern track lighting on brushed silver railings.

This terrorist media revolution has also opened the door to other stars, such as the white-guy converts deemed useful in targeting Western audiences. There was the Irish- or Australian-accented jihadist in blue, wielding his gun and forecasting eminent destruction in front of a peaceful orchard background. As-Sahab gave Adam Gadahn the limelight opportunity he never would have had in Orange County, dubbing him "Azzam the American" as if to wag their collective finger at the West and gloat that they found an American dumb enough to be their puppet. Azzam is apparently the new "it" boy, even introducing al-Zawahri on camera earlier this month in al-Qaida's campaign to "invite" (or face certain death and destruction) converts to Islam.

As-Sahab wouldn't be complete without news broadcasts -- "The Nation's Weekly News Summary" on The Voice of the Caliphate -- that are the antithesis of Katie Couric's warm and fluffy, approachable brand of news: a masked, armed jihadist reads the news with a Quran on the table and a weapon on a tripod pointed at the viewer, the requisite picture-in-picture over the news reader's shoulder to accompany each story.

In September of last year, the broadcaster droned, over some ripped-off storm footage for which they probably owe CNN a pretty penny, that "The entire Islamic world overflowed with joy when Hurricane Katrina struck in America, which seemed to reel from the strength of the hurricane and went asking for aid from all the countries of the world. Broken and completely humiliated, George Bush, a fool who is being obeyed, announced his obvious incapability to deal with the wrath of Allah that visited the city of homosexuals."

It was the al-Qaida version of the weather report: "While Louisiana is trying to recover from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, another hurricane fiercely struck the state of North Carolina, on the Atlantic coast, but so far there have been no casualties or significant damage, as was expected. We hope that Allah will humiliate America with this hurricane to make it a lesson for whoever wants to listen."

And then there's al-Qaida's ever-so-slightly exaggerated version of embedded war reporting: " . . . We now move on to the occupied land, to the land of the Caliphate, the glorious land of Iraq. . . . The Islamic Army in Iraq announced that it has launched ten chemical mortar shells and 45 Katyusha missiles on a base of the American forces and the 'Pagan' [National] Guard in Al-Madain. Many soldiers ran out of the base and anarchy took over, which is an indication of the number of casualties the enemy suffered."

But like any media outlet, there was bound to be embarrassing cutting-room footage discovered, in this case by U.S. forces in Iraq. The edited version of the discovered footage was aired April 25, but the bloopers reel was much juicier -- al-Zarqawi in his New Balance sneakers trying to figure out how to fire a gun, then realizing that the sights actually help you aim, then tossing gun safety out the window as he spins and flashes the barrel at a spooked masked colleague.

As-Sahab's product distribution is aided by promotional banners announcing upcoming programming placed on password-protected jihadist Web sites, and through airings of finished products on Arab media outlets and in the West (with all possible codes to jihad chopped out). But are they achieving the ratings they want?

Their target audience in this propaganda-fest isn't just the jihadist-at-heart. The addresses increasingly are aimed at the Western audience. Amusing, because the Islamists probably envision an untapped wellspring of Azzams, eager ideological patsies ready for the taking.

"If the Zionist Crusader missionaries of hate and counter-Islam consultants, like Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Michael Scheuer, Steven Emerson, and yes, even the Crusader-in-chief George W. Bush, were to abandon their unbelief and repent, and enter into the light of Islam and turn their swords against the enemies of God, it would be accepted of them and they would be our brothers in Islam -- for them what is for us, and upon them what is upon us," said Gadahn, er, Azzam, in his call to conversion aired Sept. 2.

"We invite all Americans and other unbelievers to Islam, wherever they are and whatever their role and status in Bush and Blair's world order. And we send a special invitation to all of you fighting Bush's crusader pipe dream in Afghanistan, Iraq, and wherever else 'Dubya' has sent you to die."

Bullying, of course, is no way to get Americans to hear their message (but they're probably on the right track with the Bush-bashing). Neither, thankfully, is the preachy droning so favored by bin Laden's bunch and adopted by Azzam Gadahn. As-Sahab may benefit from revamping their programming lineup, perhaps adding a "Big Brother"-style reality show where jihadists get ejected from the cave or a panel discussion show a la "The View" with al-Zawahri as Barbara Walters and Azzam the American as Rose O'Donnell.

Because al-Qaida's production values can devolve as quickly as they have evolved -- as evidenced by their Sept. 15 release that featured Abu Yahya al-Libi reading jihadi poems, surely a stunning breakthrough in their propaganda war. I mean, the least they could do is set the poems to hip-hop and add Azzam dancing.

Her company (Sahab), which the media production of Al-Qaeda are in the process of issuing (video recording) shows the (Libyan Abu Yahya), a fighter from the organization already escape from the prison (Bagram), known in Afghanistan talking about what has come to be known as the cause (AIDS children in Libya).

More Than Meets the Eye: Inside al Qaeda's Videos

Computer expert Neal Krawetz has conducted extensive image analysis on many of the propaganda videos released by al Qaeda's media arm as-Sahab. In many cases, he has found that the tapes were likely doctored to give a false impression of the location of the speaker, whether it be al Qaeda's No. 2 Ayman al Zawahri or American al Qaeda Adam Gadahn.

Krawetz found six different layers of video elements in this JPEG of Zawahri from July 2006, indicating some elements of the video are older while others are newer.

I'm sure in some cases he wears all-white clothes and a black or white turban so that the software has an easier time cutting out his august presence from the real background, frame by frame. Occasionally IntelCenter has released versions of videos that do not yet have the faux background seen in the official AQ releases which appear a day or two later.
